What we keep, what we don't, and the deal
Solar Still Works is run by Jon Barney in Taylorsville, Utah. This page is the whole policy. There's no longer version hiding behind it.
What we collect
| When you | We keep | We don't keep |
|---|---|---|
| Run the free check | Your email, ZIP code, system size, install date, lifetime production, and the verdict | Anything else. There is no account |
| Ask for a repair referral | The above plus the phone number and inverter brand you give us | |
| Build a Report Card or Home Sale Packet | Your email, product, ZIP, system size, install date, lifetime production, installer, brands, and the verdict | Your name, street address, serial numbers, loan details, and utility. Those are printed on your copy in your browser and never sent to us |
| Pay for a document | Stripe handles the payment and tells us only that it succeeded and which email paid | Your card number. It never touches our site |
What we do with it
- Send you your result, and one reminder about a year later to run the check again.
- If you asked for a referral, contact you ourselves, tell you the name of the repair company first, and pass your details to that one company only with your say-so.
- Look at totals, such as what share of checked systems are underproducing, without names attached.
What we never do: sell or rent your information, pass it to law firms or lead brokers, run advertising, or add you to anyone else's list. If a company ever pays us for a referral, it is disclosed on the page where you opt in.
Visit counting
We use Google Analytics to count visits, see which pages people read, and learn which installer pages bring people here. It sets a cookie so repeat visits aren't double counted. It does not see what you type into the check or the documents, and we've turned off Google's advertising features and the sharing of this data with other Google products. If your browser sends a Do Not Track signal or you use a blocker, the page works exactly the same.
Where it lives
Form submissions are stored by Netlify, our hosting provider, in the United States. Payments are processed by Stripe. Expected-production figures come from PVWatts, a public model from the National Laboratory of the Rockies; only your ZIP code's coordinates and system parameters are sent to it, never your email. Your document's saved answers sit in your own browser's local storage so you can come back to them, and you can clear them any time by clearing site data.
Your choices
Email jon@solarstillworks.com to see what we hold about you, correct it, or have it deleted. We'll do it within a few days and confirm. Unsubscribing from the yearly reminder is one reply.
Terms for the documents
- What you're buying. A one-time document generated from the information you enter and public warranty and model data. You can save and print it as many times as you like.
- What it isn't. An inspection, a warranty, insurance, or legal, financial, or engineering advice. It compares production to a model and maps typical warranty terms; it cannot detect electrical faults or safety problems, and a "normal" verdict does not mean a system is safe.
- Accuracy. The document is only as good as the numbers you enter and the typical terms for the brands you name. Confirm warranty terms against your own contract before relying on them.
- Refunds. If the document doesn't do what this site says it does, email us within 30 days and we'll refund the purchase, no argument.
- Prices. Shown on the page before you pay. No subscription, no renewal, no hidden fee.
Changes
If this page changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes and anyone on the reminder list gets a note. Questions go to jon@solarstillworks.com.
