Selling with a leased system

How to transfer a solar lease when selling a house

Updated October 19, 2026.

A solar lease or PPA stays with the house. When you sell, there are two ways out: the buyer takes over the agreement, or the agreement is bought out. Both run through the company that services the lease, and both take longer than a typical closing if nobody puts the request in writing early.

Where transfers stall

What moves it

One dated letter, early, that names the agreement, the closing date and exactly what you need back (the transfer packet and timeline, or an itemized buyout quote good through closing), and asks for a written answer by a date. Company by company: Sunrun, Tesla, Sunnova or SunPower. If the buyer was turned down: transfer denied.

The Home Sale or Buyout Packet. A dated demand, prepared from your own agreement and latest statement, that quotes the transfer, buyout or release terms, says exactly what you need and by when, and gives your agent and title company a date to point to. Plus a one-page summary for the closing file, and one follow-up letter if they don't answer in writing within 30 days.

$249, ready in 3 business days. You read and approve it, then send it yourself.

“After the letter was sent, it was mere days that they got back to me with a much more positive email looking into all our issues causing the total system to be down.”

Tami B., SunStrong customer

What happened next: after her letter, SunStrong answered in writing within days, saying it would put billing and collections on hold, cancel auto-pay and set up a deferment while it looks into the system. See page 1 of her letter.

What this page isn't

It isn't legal advice. Agreements and state rules differ, and your own agreement wins over anything general here. I prepare documents at your direction; you review, sign and send them yourself.
